There’s just one movie this week, everyone. Sure, there are a couple extremely limited releases, but otherwise the rest of the film industry wised up and let Marvel and Disney have free reign. It makes sense because nothing would beat this week’s release anyway. And who wants to lose money? Enough stalling. Let’s get to it.
Captain America: Civil War
Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Writers: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland
Guardians of the Galaxy is still probably the best movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. But the studio’s other 2014 release, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is a close second. The creative team behind that one returns for another go-round with the franchise they brought to its greatest heights a couple years ago. But this time, they bring the entire crew of Avengers with them, as the team’s interpersonal relationships have begun to fray.
The city-destroying events of the last several films in the Avengers series has pushed two factions of the team to support different ideas about public safety. Captain America (Chris Evans) and his closest friends say they need to have freedom to tackle the world’s biggest threats; collateral damage is sometimes part of that. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and his cohorts, feeling guilty for the destruction they have caused to the world they want to protect, are adamant that the team needs to be regulated, so they team with the American government to willingly check their power. This doesn’t go over so well with Cap and co. So they fight. And for the first time in these movies, Spider-Man (now played by Tom Holland) shows up. So, if you’re not into the shockingly deep themes (the role of government, responsibility for yourself and the world around you, knowing what “the right thing to do” is in any given moment, etc.) for an action extravaganza, you get the wisecracking kid from Queens there to lighten the mood and shoot some webs.
