Splatter Pop was a Pop-Up Fashion Exhibit featuring local Chicago artists & designers. NYCH Gallery in Pilsen along with fellow Chicago Arts District community businesses host this event every 2nd Friday of the month.
NYCH Gallery, along with fellow Chicago Arts District community businesses, provides recognition for new local artists. NYCH was initiated as a means to magnify the creative voices of young disenfranchise artists. I was glad to see there isn't a spirit of competition in the Pilsen art community. Several supporters came out to unite at this event. Maybe Sunday made their presence known with representatives Tony Corralez and gallery owner Mackenzie manning their own booth with plenty of merch. NYCH's entire mission is to showcase artists that are oppressed in the mainstream market somehow. Co-Owner and Founder of NYCH Gallery, artist P.Scott, showcased fashion pieces along with his work, Shattered Pyramids. It was an honor to witness his creations. In his online bio, it states, "Gallery owner Phillip Scott challenges implicit beliefs surrounding identity, issues of racial privilege, and marginalization. Through his signature color scheme of black and white, P. Scott seeks to expose the fetish for opposites as well as transcend these dichotomies particularly in their relation to race." NYCH's own Robotic Minds Clothing was a major hit and is morphing into a hometown favorite. Its most notable shirt is a direct rebuttal to the controversy Spike Lee initiated via motion picture "Chiraq".
The graphic read in a thick Windy City accent: "Chicago Is Da Bulls & The Lakefront & Michigan Ave & SummaTimeChi & Not Chiraq." This strong statement was made on the iconic Chicago color scheme of red, black, and white. You can still purchase this store here. My first introduction to Rosina~Mae was a pleasant one. Her edgy design aesthetic is quite the opposite of her sweet girl-next-door mannerisms. Her specialty is contemporary swimwear, the kind that takes you “from the beach to the street, to the party.” The models at this showcase effortless displayed how swimwear can be incorporated into your everyday wardrobe. They simultaneously displayed just how much attitude and confidence is required to rock a swimsuit as day wear. Rosina~Mae's collection can be shopped online at the nineteenth amendment. The Obsidian Bikini Top is my personal favorite retailing for $150.
Rosina Mae and Allen Vandever had an epic collaboration in this collection. Vandever takes the notion of wearable art to another level with his abstract approach. His design fingerprint was all over the capes paired with bikinis made out of recycled materials. NYCH gallery is not slowing down anytime soon. The next 2nd Fridays Gallery Night takes place July 8th, 2016, 6pm-10pm in the Chicago Arts District on South Halsted and 18th Street.
