It's been almost a year since I first saw Zella Day take the stage at Chicago's Schubas Tavern. Aside from my awe-filled first impression of her and her music, I remember being completely mesmerized by her stage presence and sweet, down-to-earth persona. Now that I'm officially a fan of Zella and her music, it was only natural that I was even more ecstatic to see her perform again in Chicago.

Since the last time I saw her, Zella has accomplished quite a lot, and that's an understatement. She's performed on popular TV shows such as Conan O'Brien and Late Night with Seth Meyers. She even performed at Chicago's behemoth music festival - Lollapalooza.

Following all of that, it was really nice to see her back on a smaller stage. Just a couple of weeks ago, I got to see Zella perform at one of my favorite local venues, Lincoln Hall (which also happens to be the sister venue of Schubas, where I first saw her perform live).

As soon as she stepped onto the stage, Zella entranced the crowd with her commanding, yet haunting voice. Switching between singing at center-stage with her guitar and dancing around with her tambourine (occasionally jumping into the crowd every now and then), Zella hypnotized the audience. One of the highlights of the night was definitely being able to listen to her sing some of her newest, unreleased songs. (Unfortunately, I wasn't able to catch the names of them).

However, that didn't make listening to her songs from "Kicker" any less exciting. Zella performed many classics off of her debut album. She opened her show with a slowed, new rendition of her song "High" then also performed some other crowd favorites such as "Sweet Ophelia", "East of Eden", and "Hypnotic". At the end of the night, she concluded her set with an encore of my favorite Zella Day song "Compass" and her newest single "Mustang Kids".

After getting previews of her new songs, I really can't wait to hear more from her. But for now, I guess I'll just continue to listen to "Kicker".
