The Black Hawk aircraft, from US Army base Fort Belvoir crashed into Breton Bay Golf and Country Club this afternoon.
Three people are believed to have been on board but the extent of their injuries are not yet known.
Officials from Fort Belvoir, which is located around 65 miles from the country club, said the UH-60 Black Hawk is from their 12th Aviation Battalion.
It went down at 1.50pm local time and one person was rushed from the scene with crash-related injuries, a spokesperson for the base said.
Reports earlier suggested one person had died, but the base did not confirm this.
Kevin Bowen, who works in the shop of the club in Leonardtown, said the helicopter was “flying kind of low” before it crashed.
He told Fox News he “saw it spinning” before it plunged towards the course, shattering as it hit the lawn between the third and fourth holes.
Images from the scene show golfers and other eye witnesses rushed to the ste of the crash seconds after the incident.
Debris lies scattered around the crash site, while huge chunks of a large tree appear to have been ripped off in the collision.
Maryland State Police spokesman Sergeant Davaughn Parker confirmed the Black Hawk helicopter crashed in Leonardtown on Monday afternoon.
He says state police have sent two medevac helicopters to the scene to assist, confirming one person had been taken to hospital.
