Football star George Weah wins Liberian presidential election

Now for a look at stories making headlines
around the world and we start with the presidential election in Liberia. Former international football star George
Weah is set to become the country's next president in what would be Liberia's first democratic
transition in over 70 years. For more let's turn to our Ro Aram. Aram this was Weah's second attempt at
the presidency since 2005 and all the hard work seems to have paid off.

That's right Semin with almost all ballots
counted from Tuesday's run-off election, Weah is well ahead of his opponent and Vice President
Joseph Boakai. Provisional results show Weah has more than
60 percent of the vote and officials results will be announced later Friday. Though voter turnout was low, Weah drew support
from the younger generation, which makes up a majority of Liberia's population of 4.6
Million people. The country's election commission said 56
percent of the country's 2.2 Million registered voters cast ballots in the runoff, which was
contested twice in court amid claims of irregularities.

That led to its original November seventh
date being delayed. Weah's campaign was also not without its controversies,
with critics saying he has yet to offer any concrete policy proposals. He also raised eyebrows with choice of running
mate Jewel Howard-Taylor. She is the ex-wife of Charles Taylor, a former
president and warlord serving 50 years in Britain for war crimes in neighboring Sierra
Leone.

Weah played for prominent football clubs,
such as AC Milan and Chelsea, and is the only African footballer to have won both FIFA World
Player of the Year and the Ballon D'Or. He stepped into politics in 2002 after retirement. He is now expected to replace incumbent Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf as president in January..
